Vans Classics have been making shoes since 1966 when Paul Van Doren founded the company. He wanted to sell his Vans Shoes directly to the public, and so opened the first Vans Store in Anaheim, South California. The first shoe that Vans made was a deck shoe that is now known as the ‘Authentic’, which incorporated their now-famous diamond sole pattern. The shoe was strengthened with added vertical lines and the model was named the Vans Shoes Waffle sole. In the mid-70s, Vans shoes became popular with skateboarders around the world, who liked the sticky soles and rugged build. As the skateboarding craze spread, so did the word about Vans Shoes, and it didn’t take long for the brand to gain recognition for the quality of their products. At a time in the 70’s the company even supplied the armed forces.
