Created in 1989 by artist Shepard Fairey during his time as a student at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Obey logo soon grew into a worldwide street art movement, spawning graffiti, posters, fine art and, eventually, a clothing range. Perhaps best known for his 2008 "Hope" poster of Barack Obama, Fairey has been a vital and controversial figure in the art world for over 30 years. His work combines biting political satire with scathing attacks on consumerism and conformity. The Obey name itself is an example of the irony that has come to characterise his work. The message is very much the opposite; don't obey, think for yourself.
In 2001, Fairey founded Obey clothing as another outlet for his artistic ideas. Ever the populist, Fairey saw a clothing brand as the perfect way to convey his views to the masses. By printing his work on shirts and hats, he could bypass the art world completely and turn the public into walking ambassadors for his message.
