Fabric decides how a beanie actually performs, and it's usually one of the first things to consider when you're choosing your new hat. There is a range of fabrics and materials available, each with slightly different properties.
Wool is probably the most traditional choice. It's also one of the warmest and most breathable options, with the heritage look that goes great with denim and boots. It does tend to need a bit more care, though: a gentle wool programme or hand-washing is recommended.
Merino is a finer, softer wool and usually the pick for outdoor activities like hiking or trekking. It regulates temperature rather than just trapping heat, stays warm when damp, and resists odour, so it handles a full day on exposed ground.
If you'd rather avoid wool, cotton and cotton blends are light, breathable, and comfortable against the skin, making them a good choice for milder days, although they're less suited to colder, wetter, or windier conditions.
Polyester turns up in fleece-lined and more technical beanies. It's lightweight, quick-drying, and wicks moisture well, which makes it a good option for running, cycling, or anything that gets you warm. Plenty of brands now use recycled polyester, so you get the same performance with a lower environmental impact.
Acrylic and acrylic blends, meanwhile, are a good everyday option. They're affordable, hard-wearing, hold their shape, and are easy to care for. Soft, snug, and great at trapping heat, they hold a little less warmth for their weight than wool, but they're hard to beat for day-to-day value.
