A plain crew sweatshirt with nothing clever going on, which is the point. Cotton-polyester blend, ribbed collar, cuffs and hem, and a small woven label on the chest instead of a big logo. 60% cotton to 40% polyester in the body, so it holds its shape better than a pure cotton crew and doesn't go baggy at the cuffs — the ribbing carries a bit of elastane for the same reason. Columbia was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1938 as the Columbia Hat Company by Paul Lamfrom, taking its name from the river that runs past the city. Gert Boyle took it over in 1970 and her son Tim Boyle has led it since 1988, bringing Pacific Northwest weather-testing into outdoor gear built to be worn rather than looked at.
