Selvedge (or selvage) comes from "self-edge". The term describes the tightly woven, finished edge produced when denim is made on an old-style shuttle loom. The weft thread passes back and forth in one continuous length. This seals each side of the fabric, so it can't unravel. You can spot it on the inside of the outseam as a neat band, often finished with a coloured thread. The red "redline" ID is the classic example.
Most modern jeans are cut from fabric woven on fast projectile looms. These looms produce wider cloth with loose, frayed edges that have to be overlocked. Shuttle looms are slower and narrower, so they make less fabric per hour. In return, they give a denser, more characterful weave with the slight irregularities (slub) that denim fans love.
Japan is widely regarded as the home of premium selvedge. When American mills replaced their shuttle looms in the late 20th century, Japanese mills bought and preserved the old machinery. They went on to perfect techniques like rope dyeing and deep indigo saturation. Brands such as Edwin have been making denim in Japan since 1947.
