Columbia was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1938 as the Columbia Hat Company by Paul Lamfrom, taking its name from the river that runs past the city. Gert Boyle took it over in 1970 and her son Tim Boyle has led it since 1988, channelling Pacific Northwest weather-testing into outdoor gear built to be worn rather than looked at.
