A roll-top commuter pack that also works for a day on the hill. 27 litres, which is the size where a bag stops being a daypack and starts being able to carry a change of clothes as well. The laptop sleeve is the good bit — padded, fleece-lined, fits up to 15 inches, and accessed from the side rather than through the main compartment, so you can pull a laptop out without unrolling the top. Two bottle pockets, an external zipped pocket, reflective accents, and a breathable mesh back panel with contoured padded straps and an adjustable sternum strap. Columbia was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1938 as the Columbia Hat Company by Paul Lamfrom, taking its name from the river that runs past the city. Gert Boyle took it over in 1970 and her son Tim Boyle has led it since 1988, extending Pacific Northwest weather-testing into outdoor gear built to be worn rather than looked at.
