Tobacco is a warm mid-brown — the more interesting of the two, and the one that reads as a winter jacket rather than a technical shell.

The heavyweight of the range, and the one doing two jobs at once — a genuinely waterproof Omni-Tech shell on the outside, Sherpa fleece against you on the inside. Most jackets pick one or the other. The shell is double ripstop nylon, critically seam-sealed, so it holds out rain rather than just beading it. Underneath is 60g Microtemp insulation over the Sherpa lining, which turns it from a wet-weather jacket into a genuinely cold-weather one. Columbia was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1938 as the Columbia Hat Company by Paul Lamfrom, taking its name from the river that runs past the city. Gert Boyle took it over in 1970 and her son Tim Boyle has led it since 1988, extending Pacific Northwest weather-testing into outdoor gear built to be worn rather than looked at.
