Cotopaxi is a brand that not only makes exceptional outdoor gear, but one which also strives to make a difference in the world. Offering sustainably produced clothing, Cotopaxi is committed to the planet and takes pride in using recycled, repurposed, and responsible materials. Cotopaxi also works strictly with ethical and Fair Trade suppliers and manufacturers throughout its supply chain to offer high quality, stylish products that not only look great but which are responsibly produced, in line with the brand’s ethos to do good and help to eradicate poverty around the world.
Launched in 2014, co-founder and CEO of Cotopaxi Davis Smith gained inspiration for the brand from his early beginnings and his love for the outdoors. After growing up in Latin America, he explored and camped in Cotopaxi National Park whenever he wasn’t at school. Not only was it the place where he developed a lifelong appreciation for the hard-working people in the Andes, but it also made him aware of the abject poverty throughout the region. Wanting to make a difference, Davis began to fuse his love of travelling with a business model that helps to fight poverty.
The name of the company, Cotopaxi, reflects the optimism and sheer determination that Davis experienced while he was in Ecuador. Cotopaxi is the name of an active stratovolcano in the Ecuadorian region within the Andes. Not only is the volcano a valued element of the local culture, but it’s also considered to be sacred by nearby communities. At the heart of Cotopaxi is their creed, Gear for Good.
From its giving model and sustainable product designs to company culture, the brand sees its business as a means of making a much-needed impact. This also includes putting 1% of all their revenue towards supporting community development and addressing poverty, as well as their grant program, which raises awareness of charity organisations. Cotopaxi prides itself on considering ethics during every stage – design, manufacture, and sale – of a product's lifestyle.
