The Nudie Jeans Story

The Nudie Jeans story begins all the way back in 2001 when Maria Erixon Levin founded the company in Gothenburg, Sweden. With a then-innovative passion for environmentally aware clothing production and sustainable, long-lasting products, Levin aimed to encompass the Swedish ideal of 'lagom'. This means 'just the right amount' and, right from the start, Nudie Jeans turned away from fast fashion and low-quality clothing that would need to be replaced quickly.

Nudie Jeans aimed to go against the grain and use raw fabric to create sturdy dry denim. At the time, the demand for organic cotton was not as big as it would become, and Nudie Jeans set its sights on becoming a brand that created completely organic denim products. While that plan did not come to fruition until 2012, now all denim used by Nudie Jeans is created using 100% organic cotton.

Blending the idea of environmental awareness with creating beautiful dry denim, Nudie Jeans stood out from the crowd. Even today, when the importance of sustainability and consumer awareness is at an all-time high, they continue to be a leading force when it comes to aligning ethical integrity with fashion. In fact, one of Nudie Jeans’ leading principles is to take responsibility for the whole product - from design to production to supply and beyond.

Nudie’s Impact On The Denim Market

Since it was formed, Nudie had managed to carve itself a unique position within the global denim market. Combining a touch of Scandinavian cool with the use of premium fabrics and sustainable manufacturing processes, it is known for offering jeans in a range of different fits that offer a contemporary yet classic look, whether you opt for a looser fitting pair or prefer something more on the skinny side.

At the time Nudie Jeans was founded, consumers were not as widely aware of where their clothes came from as they are today. However, Nudie believed that it was worth having a high level of awareness of every stage of their product development and production. With an emphasis on fair and legal working conditions and sustainable production methods, Nudie Jeans has been a leader in what has grown to be known as circularity.

Nudie aims to be as open and transparent as possible when it comes to how their products are made, and the environmental impact they have. For example, Nudie publishes information for each product in their collection that shows the entire production journey, including the amount of water used to create the item in question.

This increases consumer awareness of their own environmental impact and encourages competitors to keep up. It also reveals how much energy and work really goes into the consumption of clothing. While it took some time, Nudie Jeans’ producing 100% organic cotton has become increasingly popular and even expected, especially when it comes to premium brands in the denim industry.

As well as being a brand with strong ethical values, Nudie is also one that happens to make great quality products. The brand was a driving force behind the resurgence in popularity of raw denim since the start of the century, and encourages customers to wear their jeans for extended periods without washing.

Not only does this reduce water consumption, it also means that over time each pair of jeans will develop a unique pattern of fading that is individual to the person who wears the jeans. Nudie offered something unique at the time it launched; a forward thinking denim brand that combined quality materials with stylish modern fits, that also enabled customers to know they were making an environmentally conscious choice.

Nudie Jeans & Sustainability

The backbone of the Nudie Jeans brand is their commitment to sustainability - not just in how their products are produced, but in their overall lifetime usage.

The organic cotton used by Nudie Jeans contributes strongly to their sustainability as a brand, as conventional cotton is known to contribute up to 25% of the global usage of artificial and damaging chemicals and pesticides. When it comes to their washes, Nudie Jeans does not use harsh chemicals due to their passion for dry denim.

As well as working towards using 100% organic cotton, Nudie Jeans reuses used denim for new products, creating a more sustainable item of clothing. During production, Nudie Jeans focuses on working with suppliers which are also open and transparent, working with Fair Wear Foundation to keep working conditions fair and ethical.

Even once you have purchased a pair of Nudie jeans, you can expect to enjoy wearing them for a long time to come, with full support from the brand. They suggest wearing them every day for six months without washing them. This allows the jeans to fit perfectly and for the fabric to wear in for a better look.

Nudie also offers free repairs so that consumers can easily mend their jeans if they encounter any damage, ensuring that they last for longer. This is the antithesis of throwaway, fast fashion culture, which encourages consumers to see Nudie Jeans as an investment piece and think about repairing and reusing rather than replacing.

Nudie Jeans is also committed to reusing the denim from old pairs of jeans. Consumers can send their old pairs back to Nudie, and these may be used to create patches or even new products such as hats and other accessories. They also sell preloved jeans back to new consumers, further emphasising the lasting quality of their denim.

Moving forward, Nudie Jeans has big aims for its sustainability practices. Analysing the areas where their production has the largest environmental impact, their goals include introducing more reusable energy such as wind power to their company overall, including their repair workshops. The brand is seeking to become an industry leader by improving its water use efficiency, integrating climate change policies into its own practices, and continuing to reduce waste at every level.

Nudie Fabrics & Selvedge Denims

Nudie Jeans prides itself on the quality of its denim fabrics. Both dry and washed denim is used for Nudie jeans, with an emphasis on dry denim as a leading characteristic of the brand.

Dry, raw or unwashed denim is denim that has been untreated - it will not have been bleached or washed in any way. This means that the jeans will not be purchased with a vintage or broken-in look. Instead, the consumer will break the denim in, creating a bespoke fit and a unique look that depends on the amount you wear your jeans, and what you do in them.

As well as championing dry denim, Nudie Jeans uses all organic cotton and Japanese selvedge denim to create some of their jeans. This is seen as a superior type of denim, especially by those who are passionate about the material.

Made traditionally, like authentic vintage denim from the past, selvedge denim is produced using a different weaving process than non-selvedge denim, and is created with careful craftsmanship and specialised machinery. The looms used to create selvedge denim produce extremely high levels of detail in the fabric. Manufacturing selvedge denim is typically a slower process than manufacturing regular denim, with a lower output as the shuttle looms used aren’t able to produce large sheets of material. However, the tradeoff is a higher quality, longer lasting product.

Some of the fabrics used by Nudie Jeans include:

Dry Selvedge

One of the most popular types of selvedge denim used by Nudie Jeans is 13.5 oz dry selvedge. This denim is created in Japan, with a special orange selvedge ID. It is used in the Lean Dean jeans.

Deep Dry Selvedge

Another kind of dry selvedge is the 12.5 oz deep dry selvedge used in the Grim Tim jeans, which was created by studying a pair of jeans found in the USA that were thought to be over 100 years old.

Dry Ace Selvedge

14.2 oz dry ace selvedge is also used, which was inspired by 1950s denim jeans, with weft yarns that are dipped in pure indigo. This process is repeated 20 times to create a unique look.

Snake Eyes Selvedge

Snake eyes selvedge is another popular 13 oz denim which is created to look like vintage denim which becomes more distressed as it is worn and washed over time, with a grainy appearance.

Ten Pin Selvedge

With 13 oz fabric, ten pin selvedge has cotton fibres left on the surface of the material, creating a soft feel as it is broken in over time. This fabric quickly looks like classic vintage denim with a fuzzy feeling.

Dry Maze Selvedge

Another type of selvedge used by Nudie Jeans includes 14.25 oz dry maze selvedge, which is created in Turkey and uses indigo dye in the twill lines to create a striking contrast as the denim fades.

Black Selvedge

Classic black selvedge is perfect for those who don’t want their jeans to fade quickly, as the dye soaks into the fabric and will not appear to have a high level of contrast as the surface fades. However, black selvedge fades into a steady grey tone.

Nudie Jeans Washing Techniques

Nudie Jeans uses different washing treatments and techniques to create the unique looks you will find across their range of jeans. Some of the washing techniques that they use for their jeans include:

  • Hand Scraping

Hand scraping is one of the more traditional ways to wash or distress denim. Using this method, Emery paper is used to scrape the knees, pockets, thighs and more to create a worn look. It can also be done with a machine.

  • Water Washing

Water washing is the most common and well-known washing technique used for denim, and one that Nudie Jeans is moving away from. This process uses a large amount of water compared to other methods, as the denim is rinsed after dyeing. Due to Nudie Jeans’ commitment to raw and dry denim, this process is not as widely utilised. It is also environmentally unfriendly, creating energy and water waste.

  • Ozone/Steam Washing

Ozone or steam washing is an innovative technology championed by Nudie Jeans. This harnesses the natural bleaching created by ozone gas. This method has a lower environmental impact than older methods and creates lighter denim.

  • Laser Treatment

Another positive innovation for sustainable practices, laser treatment does not use stones, sand or water. Laser washing uses lasers to burn the wash into the denim, for a fast and effective look. It is ideal for creating a vintage aesthetic.

  • Sandpaper Drums

A machine version of hand scraping, sandpaper drums are used in dyeing machines which automatically creates a distressed effect. This method saves energy and water.

Q: What is the best selling type of Nudie Jeans?

A: Nudie offers many popular products, but the best seller of their current collection is the Lean Dean. This flattering fit suits a range of bodies and styles, making Lean Dean versatile and popular.

Q: Where do Nudie Jeans come from?

A: While the brand is based in Sweden, Nudie is 100% transparent about the locations of the factories where its jeans are manufactured. They may be produced in Tunisia (which covers over 60% of total production), Italy, Portugal, India, Turkey, Poland, and Sweden itself.

Q: How long do Nudie Jeans last?

A: Nudie jeans have a variable lifespan, based on how you break them, how much you wear them, and what you do while wearing them. Whether a pair of jeans uses dry or washed denim can also contribute to this. A pair of dry jeans are meant to be worn without washing for six months and broken in over time. While Nudie jeans are made to last for many years, the brand also offers repairs to keep your jeans in use for longer.

Q: Do Nudie Jeans shrink when washed?

A: Designed to minimise shrinkage as much as possible, dry jeans should only shrink around 3%. Nudie Jeans does suggest that you follow the washing temperature instructions appropriate to your jeans to reduce this as much as possible. Breaking your jeans in for six months can also lower the amount of shrinkage you notice, and result in a more bespoke fit.

Q: Do Nudie Jeans fit true to size?

A: Nudie jeans are true to size regardless of style. The range of different fits (from tighter to looser) is important to consider when choosing your jeans. Selecting your usual size will ensure that you enjoy a good fit and that your jeans will last longer.
